Pinot Grigio

Pinot gris or Grauburgunder is a white wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. Thought to be a mutant clone of the Pinot noir variety, it normally has a grayish-blue fruit, accounting for its name (gris meaning "gray" in French) but the grapes can have a brownish pink to black and even white appearance. The word pinot, which comes from the word meaning "pine cone" in French, could have been given to it because the grapes grow in small pine cone-shaped clusters. The wines produced from this grape also vary in color from a deep golden yellow to copper and even a light shade of pink, and it is one of the more popular grapes for orange wine. The clone of Pinot gris grown in Italy is known as Pinot grigio.

  1. Noble Vines 152 PINOT GRIGIO
    $10.99

A natural offshoot of the Pinot Noir grape, Pinot Grigio 152 originated in Alsace, France. Its noble roots date back to the Middle Ages when Burgundian monks brought Pinot Gris, as it was called, to Hungary. Three centuries later the vine came back over the Alps when Army General Lazare de Schwendi picked up vine
cuttings in Tokaij before returning home to Alsace after a victorious battle. The Alsace region has similar growing conditions to the cool vineyards and rich volcanic soils of our San Bernabe Vineyard in Monterey, California, where clone 152 thrives. Pinot Grigio clone 152 is distinguished by vibrant floral aromas, pronounced weight and a long finish. Fresh, lively flavors of citrus and ripe stone fruit, balanced by a hint of minerality are typical to this selection of Pinot Grigio.

  2. CAPOSALDO Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie IGT
    $10.99

In northern Italy’s Delle Venezie region, the Pinot Grigio vines are planted to hillside vineyards situated 750 feet above sea level, where they benefit from well-drained, mineral rich, volcanic basaltic rock and calcareous clay soils. After handpicking, the grapes were gently guided through a pneumatic press, followed by inoculation with selected yeasts and three weeks of cold fermentation. Malolactic fermentation was avoided to promote fresh acidity, and the wine is not oak aged, allowing the grapes’ varietal character to remain prominent.
